Description
Wisteria (Hygrophila Difformis)
Hygrophila Difformis, also known as Water Wisteria or Synnema Triflorum, originates from India and Thailand. It produces finely branched leaves that have a delicate appearance and are unusually and irregularly shaped. Under good conditions, Wisteria will grow fast and the plant is prized in the aquarium hobby for its ability to quickly absorb excess nutrients from the water column, keeping your aquarium clean of pollutants and tank inhabitants healthy.
Live aquarium plants like Wisteria provide numerous benefits to the aquarium. They look beautiful but also produce oxygen and remove harmful compounds from the tank’s water, ensuring a healthy environment for fish, shrimp, snails, and even beneficial bacteria. They also provide shelter, spawning surfaces for fish, and prevent algae.
Care & Maintenance for Wisteria
This unusual aquarium plant's leaf shape is highly influenced by aquarium water temperature and lighting. At lower temperatures, the plant will produce smaller and thicker leaves but at higher temperatures, the leaves will grow larger and more divided. In addition at lower intensity lighting, the plant's lower leaves may drop off and the spacing between the leaves will increase. At higher intensity lighting, the plant will appear more compact.
- Minimum Lighting Required: Medium
- Temperature Range: 71-86°F
- Tank Placement: Background
Hygrophila Difformis must be provided with adequate space to thrive. It looks best when planted in well-spaced groups of four to six stems. The plant can be propagated from cuttings or by side shoots. When cutting or trimming the plant, use sharp scissors like our aquascaping curved scissors.
Wisteria is also available as potted.

Beautiful but doesn’t look like Wisteria pictured
Pictures has lace like leaves. Which is what I was expecting…. What I got has more of a mint leaf shape. Still Wisteria just more broad leaf than I was hoping for.

My new favorite!
My new favorite background plant. I ordered two potted & got two really nice plants. I planted as recommended & man have they grown! It's only been a week and they have grown an inch or more already. Very healthy plants! I'll order more but not until cooler weather. I love the liquid Co2 as that I ordered too!

Satisfied Customer
I ordered this several weeks ago. The plants arrived in beautiful condition and have grown steadily. I've even had to trim and replant some of them.

Finally, success!
I'm relatively new to planted tanks and simply couldn't find plants that would "thrive". Two months ago I did some research and wisteria looked like a good gamble. I'm in California and nowhere local seemed to carry it. The plants I got from Modern Aquarium were in great shape, even from the other side of the country, and took right away in my tank. The plants I got were emersed, but there was no melting of the existing leaves, it just started growing immersed leaves and growing offshoots. I've already had to do some trimming and used the cuttings to fill out other areas of my 75 gallon tank. The results I've gotten from these plants is so successful and so opposite of other plants I've tried its scary LOL. But I love them, I wish I could add a picture to my review!

Super Healthy Water Wisteria
This is a great plant to get a ton of photosynthesis happening in your tank... STAT. The specimens I received were ideal. Four-ish stems per bunch, 8-9" tall, and packed with healthy algae-free leaves. This was my first order from Modern Aquarium, and I will certainly order more in the future!

Water Wisteria
This is a fun little plant. It came in good condition, with lobe shaped leaves. It grows very quickly!! Since being in my tank, the leaves have started to appear more separated/feathery (not sure the right word for it). It’s really pretty. Very easy to propogate. I am experimenting with using it as a carpeting plant.
