Hornwort (Ceratophyllum Demersum)
Hornwort, also known as Ceratophyllum Demersum, is found worldwide. It is a well-known plant in the hobby. It grows long stems with needle-like and stiff leaves or, in common parlance, the "horns" from where it takes its common name. Hornwort can be used as a floating plant or as an upright stem plant. It does not have roots but when planted, Hornwort produces rhizomes that allow it to attach to the gravel. This plant is a fast grower and many hobbyists use it in fry tanks to provide hiding places for young fish. Because of its fast growth, Hornwort is great for planted aquariums as it will quickly absorb extra nutrients from the water column, preventing algal blooms.
Hornwort can flower and produce seeds. However, the flowers and seeds are small and hardly noticeable. The best and easiest way to propagate hornwort is to snip the stems apart. The separated pieces will just continue growing, creating new plants.
Caring For Hornwort
Under good conditions, this plant will grow robustly and have light to deep green coloration. It is an easy plant to care for and grow. It does not require any special care or strong lighting but, if provided, the plant will grow fast.

My plants came in so healthy, a pretty spring green and those two bunches are huge! After a short quarantine, I put a bunch in each corner of my tank, weighted. What i didn’t expect were the Diamond Tetras to have so much fun claiming their spots and swimming through them! Great plants! My thanks to the team at Modern Aquarium

Great plant, but infested with pest snails
Posted by Noelle on 11 Mar 2022The hornwort I received was very healthy and beautiful, and I would love to get more, however it was infested with pest snails. I have two elderly male bettas (I lost the third a few days ago), and I’m having to start up an entirely new tank for the eldest one because the snail issue has gotten so bad. I haven’t found any snails in my female sorority tank so far, but all three boys’ tanks I’m finding and picking out new snails every single day, and cupramine/aquarium salt aren’t helping. I’ll only buy guaranteed snail free plants in the future.

Posted by Linda on 8 Mar 2022Impressed is not nearly a strong enough word for this delivery. It was well packaged. I followed directions and discovered 1 snail. Then I I trounced it to my aquarium and WOW! It took off nearly as soon as I planted it. It is spreading out and growing incredibly fast. I am just so pleased I can't even put it into words!

The package arrived on time with majority of the plant being in good condition (some tips where browning, but nothing a little bit of prunning and time won’t fix).

Posted by Alec Chan on 17 Feb 2022The horn wort adjusted BEAUTIFULLY in my 2 gallon shrimp tank, I’m waiting for it to grow more in my 10 gallon nano fish tank but everything was packaged beautifully and the horn wort is excellent quality. I highly recommend buying from Modern Aquarium!

Posted by Nyree on 3 Feb 2022I bought this for my axolotl tank. It's a darker green than I expected, and I'm unsure if that means its dying? I've had it in a tank of fresh water with plant food and light and it is still a darker green, but doesnt seem to be dead. Maybe it will green up or maybe it's just a darker batch. As long as it lives im happy with it!
