Benefits of Lava Rocks
Lava rocks can be used to create a beautiful waterscape, but that’s not the only thing they’re good for. Lava rocks can be used for aquarium backgrounds as well. We also recommend aquascaping lava rocks because they are colonized by beneficial bacteria and enhance the health of your environment. These are denitrifying bacteria that improve water quality by removing harmful ammonia or nitrates.
How does it work? The tiny pores within the rocks are colonized by the nitryfying bacteria and, as the water passes through the rock, they act as a filter consuming ammonia, nitrate and producing oxygen and less toxic byproducts.
Prepping Your Lava Rocks
Our lava rocks are ready for your aquarium. Simply rinse them under tap water to remove any loose dirt or dust particles and they are ready to put in your aquarium. You can even place anubias and ferns with them right away or leave them on their own.
