Description
Anubias Afzelii
Anubias Afzelii is also known as the narrow-leaved anubias. It originates from West Africa in areas like Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. This anubias tank plant is ideal for aquariums that have active and aggressive fish as well as herbivorous specimens.
Anubias Afzelii produces elongated green leaves that are reminiscent of eucalyptus or bay laurel leaves. The thick, leathery leaves are very tough and can grow up to 10” tall.
Maintenance & Care for Anubias Afzelii
While you might think this plant does best with tons of lighting and high water temperature, the truth is that it requires more temperate care and maintenance.
- Minimum Lighting Required: Low
- Temperature Range: 71-78°F
- Tank Placement: Midground-Background
You can expect slow but steady growth from the Anubias Afzelii in optimal conditions. It can grow in emerged or submerged conditions. We recommend attaching it to a rock or driftwood, but you can also plant it in a gravel-based aquarium as long as you don’t bury the rhizome. The rhizome is a thick tuber where the leaves and roots grow out, and it can rot if buried.

Very handsome
This plant arrived in very robust health: nice green leaves and a generous root system. Several leaves were damaged, but this did not diminish the overall obvious rigor of the plant. I am mostly reducing the stars to four because it is just so puny. The leaves are maybe 1 inch upon arrival. The description of the plant boasts up to 10 inch leaves and that's why I chose this particular Anubias. Oh, except they grow so darn slow that it will probably take 2 or 3 years to get there, if not longer. I would still recommend this plant (and this seller, which I have used several times), but you do need to bear in mind that this is a long term commitment - more like a houseplant than an aquarium plant in terms of growth rate. This is not a deal breaker for me, because good things are worth waiting for, but right now my nano aquarium is looking a lot more sparse than I anticipated.
